People often use “visa” to mean any permission to move abroad. In the Netherlands, that word can hide several different questions: whether you may enter, how long you may stay, and whether you may work. This guide helps you separate those questions and identify a relevant official route. It is an educational overview, not an assessment of your personal eligibility; follow the current IND and NetherlandsWorldwide instructions for your circumstances.
1. Entry, residence and work are separate questions
A short-stay Schengen visa concerns a visit, subject to the conditions of that visa and the applicable short-stay rules. A residence permit concerns permission to live in the Netherlands for a specified purpose. An MVV is an entry visa associated with certain longer-stay applications. Some applicants are exempt from needing an MVV. The official checker is a better starting point than assuming every nationality follows the same process.
NetherlandsWorldwide explains that EU, EEA and Swiss citizens do not need a Dutch residence permit or visa to live in the Netherlands, although other conditions and registration arrangements can apply. For other nationalities, a stay longer than 90 days may require a residence permit. Existing immigration status and family circumstances can affect the appropriate process. Being admitted as a visitor does not automatically give permission to move permanently or take a job.
Ask three questions when looking at any route: what is the purpose of residence, who submits or supports the application, and what work is allowed? Write the answers from the official page into a planning sheet. If an answer depends on a document or an exception, record that uncertainty. Do not turn a general description into a promise that you will qualify.
Three questions to ask before choosing a route
This planning graphic does not determine eligibility. Use the official checker.
- 01
Who are you?
Nationality, existing status and relevant family circumstances.
- 02
Why are you staying?
Visit, work, study, family, business or another purpose.
- 03
What is allowed?
Check entry, residence and work conditions separately.
2. Short visits and the MVV entry step
For ordinary Schengen short stays, the familiar limit is generally up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. A visa may authorize fewer days, and some travelers are visa-exempt rather than visa holders. Check the applicable rules, the permitted duration and any conditions on your own document. A visit to another Schengen country does not simply restart the ordinary short-stay allowance.
An MVV serves a different purpose: it is an entry step for certain residence applications. Whether you need one depends on your nationality and situation. Do not confuse the validity of an entry sticker with the duration of a residence permit. Follow the collection, travel and document instructions in your decision and on the relevant official pages.
A language course, an informal job offer or a place on our launch list does not create a right to enter, reside or work. Plan immigration decisions around official eligibility rather than around a course enrollment. This distinction matters if you are comparing a short exploratory visit with a later move for employment, study or family reasons.
3. Employment routes: a job offer is the starting point
The highly skilled migrant route requires an employer recognized by the IND to apply for the permit. The official requirements include a suitable employment contract, the applicable income requirement and a salary that is in line with the market. Thresholds and details can change, so check the live IND requirements rather than relying on a fixed amount copied into an article.
The Single Permit, often called GVVA, combines residence and work permission for relevant paid-employment situations. It has its own conditions and application process. Other employment categories, including the European Blue Card, intra-corporate transfer and research routes, may be relevant to a different situation. The IND’s residence-permit directory helps you compare categories without assuming that one work permit covers all jobs.
Before accepting an arrangement, ask the employer which route it intends to use and who handles the application. Read the official work conditions and the notation on the residence document. If the job changes or ends, consult the instructions for your route promptly. Dutch practice can help you discuss a contract, but it cannot replace verification of your work authorization.
| Route to investigate | Common starting point | Question to check |
|---|---|---|
| Highly skilled migrant | Recognized employer and eligible contract | Which current salary requirement applies? |
| GVVA / paid employment | Employment that fits the relevant route | Which residence and work conditions apply? |
| University or higher professional study | Admission and recognized institution | Will the institution submit my application? |
| Partner / family | Qualifying family relationship | Which national or EU-law process applies? |
| Orientation year | Qualifying study or research history | Does my qualification satisfy the detailed criteria? |
| Start-up / self-employed | Eligible business proposal or activity | Which business and financial requirements apply? |
4. University study and the orientation year
For the university or higher professional education student permit, the educational institution must be a recognized sponsor and submits the application. The IND lists requirements including full-time study, sufficient funds and progress during the course. Admission to a program and the immigration process are related, but they are not the same decision.
The IND currently describes restricted employee work for this student route: an employer needs a work permit, and the student chooses either up to 16 hours a week or full-time work in June, July and August. Different rules can apply to a course internship or self-employment. Check the exact category before relying on a general statement that “students can work.”
An orientation-year permit can be relevant after qualifying study, a doctorate or research. It is not automatic for every graduate worldwide. The IND sets detailed eligibility criteria. The permit lasts one year and cannot be extended as an orientation year; its work conditions allow free work without an employer work permit. If you want to remain afterward, investigate a suitable next residence purpose in time.
5. Joining a partner or family member
A partner route depends on the relationship and the status of the person in the Netherlands, as well as other requirements. The IND partner page explains the relevant conditions and application steps. Family members of EU, EEA or Swiss citizens may need to consider a process under EU law instead of assuming that the national partner-permit route is always the correct one.
Work permission for a partner is not a single universal rule. It can depend on the sponsor’s status, and the residence document states the relevant conditions. Check those conditions before accepting employment. Some family applications also involve integration requirements or exemptions; establish what applies to your particular route through the official information.
For practical preparation, organize the relationship documents requested by the authority and check whether foreign documents need legalization or an accepted translation. Keep track of the application and official requests for further information. A friend’s successful case can suggest questions to ask, but it does not prove that your circumstances will produce the same result.
6. Entrepreneurs and other specialist routes
The start-up route is intended for an innovative business and includes working with a reliable facilitator. It is valid for a maximum of one year and cannot be extended as a start-up permit. A later self-employed application requires meeting that route’s conditions. A business idea alone, without the required structure and supporting evidence, is not the full application.
The self-employed route has its own assessment and requirements. Specific nationality-based treaty arrangements may affect how an application is assessed, so use the official self-employed page for your situation. Do not assume that registering a company or working online automatically supplies immigration permission.
The IND also lists exchange, au-pair, working-holiday, seasonal-work and other specialist categories, alongside asylum and protection processes. These are distinct routes with distinct purposes and conditions. Permanent residence and citizenship are later questions with their own criteria; a temporary permit does not automatically become either one. Use the directory to identify the correct category before gathering documents or paying an application fee.
7. Build a route-specific application plan
Your planning sheet should contain the route, sponsor or applicant, official checklist, next action and relevant expiry dates. Add a column for unresolved questions. Verify fees, required income and expected decision periods on the official site at the time you apply. This article deliberately avoids freezing changing figures into a universal budget or timeline.
Learn the words you will see on letters, but keep the full official wording when an important condition is involved. Ask for clarification if you cannot tell whether a document requests an action or merely confirms receipt. A basic understanding of administrative Dutch helps you read calmly; it does not make you responsible for interpreting a complex legal situation alone.
Before taking a major step, return to the official route page and compare it with your documents. If your circumstances do not fit the examples, contact the relevant authority or a qualified adviser. Good planning combines language confidence with an accurate understanding of which decisions belong to the immigration authority.
